Perplexity SEO: how to become a cited source

Perplexity answers a question and lists the sources it used. Optimising for it is not about ranking a page at position one, it is about being one of the handful of sources the model considers trustworthy enough to quote for a given prompt.

How Perplexity chooses sources

Perplexity retrieves live search results for the prompt, then summarises the pages it can fetch and parse, citing the ones it drew from. Two consequences follow. First, classic search visibility still matters, because retrieval starts from a search index. Second, format matters as much as authority: a page that answers the exact question in a short, self-contained passage is easier to quote than one that buries the answer.

Why Reddit shows up so often

For comparison and recommendation prompts, community discussion is what buyers asked for and what assistants surface. Reddit threads pair the question with several first-hand answers, are indexed quickly, and read as unbiased. That is why a real presence in the right subreddits often moves AI visibility faster than another landing page. It also has to be earned: threads that read as advertising get removed, and removed threads cite nothing.

A step-by-step approach

  1. 1. Start from the questions Perplexity actually answers

Perplexity is used for comparison and decision questions: best tool for X, alternatives to Y, is Z worth it. List the ten questions a buyer would ask before choosing your category, in their words. Those are the prompts you need to be present in, not your brand name.

  2. 2. Check who is cited today

Run each prompt and note the citations shown in the answer. Community threads, comparison pages and documentation dominate; pure marketing pages rarely appear. That list is your real competitive set and it tells you which format earns a citation for each question.

  3. 3. Build presence where the citations come from

Where Reddit threads are cited, the durable move is genuine participation: warmed accounts, useful answers in the subreddits your buyers read, and honest disclosure when you mention your product. See our guide on warming up a Reddit account before posting anything branded.

  4. 4. Make your own pages quotable

Perplexity extracts short, self-contained passages. Answer the question in the first two sentences of a section, use plain headings that match the question, keep specifics (numbers, prices, limits) in text rather than images, and avoid burying the answer under a narrative intro.

  5. 5. Stay crawlable and current

Serve real HTML, keep the page reachable from your navigation and sitemap, and update facts that go stale. Perplexity favours pages it can fetch fast and sources it has seen recently.

  6. 6. Measure by prompt, not by rank

There is no ranking report here. Re-run your prompt list on a fixed schedule and record whether you are cited, mentioned without a link, or absent. Movement across that list is the metric.

What not to do

  • • Mass-posting brand mentions across subreddits: fastest route to removal.
  • • Publishing thin pages for every prompt variation instead of one clear answer.
  • • Hiding key facts in images, PDFs or JavaScript-only components.
  • • Claiming results or reviews you cannot back up; assistants surface rebuttals too.
