Reddit Ads vs Organic Reddit: Which One for an Ecommerce Brand?

By Nils, founder of Upnext Agency · October 4, 2026 · 6 min read

When an ecommerce brand discovers Reddit, the first question is often: "Do we run ads or post ourselves?" Both work, but not for the same thing.

Reddit Ads: what it is

Reddit has its own ad platform. You pay to show sponsored posts in users' feeds, targeted by community, interest or keyword. Ads are labelled "Promoted" and users can comment on them.

Strengths:

  • immediate traffic, as soon as the campaign launches;
  • very precise subreddit targeting;
  • easy-to-measure results (clicks, sales, cost per purchase).

Limits:

  • everything stops when you cut the budget;
  • Reddit users are wary of ads, and comments under an ad can be blunt;
  • an ad doesn't build lasting trust: it doesn't rank on Google and nobody cites it in a discussion.

Organic Reddit: what it is

It is the "natural" presence: accounts that take part in discussions, useful posts, answers to your future customers' questions, threads that talk about your brand and your problem.

Strengths:

  • content stays online and keeps working for years;
  • threads can rank on Google, on the searches that come right before a purchase;
  • it is perceived as authentic, so it reassures far more than an ad;
  • the cost doesn't grow with your sales volume.

Limits:

  • it is slower: think weeks, not days;
  • it takes know-how to avoid bans (see our guide);
  • results are harder to attribute precisely.

The comparison in one sentence

Reddit ads buy attention. An organic presence builds trust.

What we recommend for an ecommerce brand

For most stores, the logical order is:

  1. 1Organic first. Build a presence, answer questions, make the brand exist in your niche's discussions. That's what your future customers will find when they look for reviews.
  2. 2Then ads, to amplify. Once positive threads exist, Reddit ads (or Meta, or Google) send traffic to a brand that already inspires trust. The conversion rate is not the same.

Doing it the other way round means paying to send people to a brand nobody talks about. They'll look for reviews, find nothing, and leave.

What about budget?

Ads cost whatever you decide to spend, and stop with the budget. Organic mostly costs time and expertise: either you do it in-house (count several hours a week for months), or you hand it to an agency. We break down market prices in our article how much a Reddit agency costs.

We do this for ecommerce brands and SaaS, every month
