How to Promote Your Brand on Reddit Without Getting Banned

Reddit has a reputation: the platform where brands get torn apart. That is true for the ones that show up with a sales pitch. For everyone else, it is one of the most profitable channels out there. The difference comes down to a few rules.
Understand who can ban you
On Reddit, there are three levels of filtering:
- automatic filters in each subreddit (account age, minimum karma, banned links);
- moderators, volunteers who protect their community from spam;
- the community itself, which votes. A post that is too promotional sinks within minutes and can end up as a mocking screenshot.
Every rule below exists to get past those three filters.
Rule 1: a credible account before talking about yourself
An account created yesterday that mentions a brand is the number one spam signal. An account first needs age, karma and a history of useful participation across several communities. Plan several weeks of preparation before any brand mention.
Rule 2: read each subreddit's rules
Every community has its own rules, in the sidebar and the pinned posts. Some ban any brand mention, others have a dedicated self-promotion thread, others welcome founders who introduce themselves. Ignoring those rules guarantees removal.
Rule 3: give far more than you take
The vast majority of your activity should be useful with no link to your product: answering questions, sharing an experience, giving advice. An old Reddit guideline talked about 10% self-promotion at most. It is no longer official, but it is still a good benchmark.
Rule 4: transparency is cheaper than a ban
If you recommend your product, say you work on it. An open recommendation ("I work at X so I'm biased, but here's what we do for this problem") is often well received. A fake recommendation that gets discovered means a banned account and a thread citing your brand as an example of what not to do.
Rule 5: solve the problem, don't place the product
The right moment to mention your brand is when someone asks a question your product genuinely answers. Start with the useful answer, then mention the product as one option among others. If your answer only has value with the link, it doesn't belong there.
Mistakes that get you banned for sure
- Copy-pasting the same message across several subreddits.
- Dropping a link in an account's first messages.
- Running several accounts from the same connection and upvoting your own posts.
- Buying "aged" accounts: their history doesn't match your topic, and moderators notice.
- Deleting a downvoted comment instead of understanding why.
What if a negative thread mentions your brand?
Don't try to get it removed and don't flood it with fake positive reviews. Reply publicly, from your official account, calmly and with a solution. An unhappy customer handled well in public is one of the best proofs of seriousness a brand can show. We detail the method in our article on managing your reputation on Reddit.
In short
Reddit rewards brands that behave like community members and punishes those that behave like advertisers. It is slower than an ad campaign, but what you build there stays.
