Reddit Marketing for SaaS: The Complete Guide

By Nils, founder of Upnext Agency · October 22, 2026 · 7 min read

For a SaaS, Reddit is often the most underrated channel. It's where your future users ask "what tool for…?", compare alternatives and complain about their current software. If your product isn't in those discussions, a competitor's is.

Why Reddit works so well for SaaS

  • People compare tools there. "Best invoicing tool for freelancers?", "Alternative to Notion?": these threads are read by thousands, then rank on Google for years.
  • Communities are organized by profession. Developers, marketers, accountants, founders: every profession has its subreddits. You talk directly to your target.
  • B2B buyers verify their choices there. Before a demo, many search "tool name reddit" to read unfiltered reviews.

Step 1: map the discussions

Before posting anything, find where your problem is discussed. On Google, search:

  • "best + your category + reddit";
  • "alternative to + your competitor + reddit";
  • "your competitor + reddit";
  • the problem your tool solves, phrased the way a user would say it.

Note the subreddits that keep appearing and the threads already ranking on Google. Those are your priority targets.

Step 2: participate before promoting

An account that mentions its tool in its first comment gets removed. Start by being useful: answer technical questions, share experience, give advice with no link. That's what makes your future mentions credible. Our guide to promoting your brand without getting banned details the rules.

Step 3: answer recommendation requests

When someone asks for a tool for a problem you genuinely solve:

  1. 1give a real answer first (how to choose, which criteria);
  2. 2list several options honestly, yours included;
  3. 3say clearly that you work on the tool;
  4. 4explain who it's built for, and who it isn't.

That last step is counter-intuitive, but it's what builds trust.

Step 4: publish content that stands on its own

Posts that work for SaaS: a data-backed experience, a free template, an analysis of a problem in the profession, lessons from a failure. The product shows up in context, never in the title.

Step 5: measure

Use UTM links when a link is accepted, add "Reddit" as an answer to your "How did you hear about us?" question at sign-up, and track branded searches in Search Console. Part of the impact will stay invisible: someone reads a thread, then searches your name on Google a week later.

What to avoid

  • Fake "happy user" accounts: they always get caught.
  • Identical messages across communities.
  • Defensive replies to criticism of your product.
