How to Find the Right Subreddits for Your Ecommerce Brand

On Reddit, everything depends on choosing the right communities. The right message in the wrong subreddit is useless. The right subreddit, even a small one, can drive sales for years. Here is the method we use for our clients.
Step 1: start from the problem, not the product
Your customers don't talk about your product, they talk about their problem. An insulated bottle brand isn't looking for "r/bottles": it is looking for hikers, cyclists, people packing a gym bag, parents searching for a bottle that doesn't leak.
Write down 10 problems, situations or passions linked to your product. Those are your starting keywords.
Step 2: search the discussions on Google
Reddit's internal search is average. Use Google:
- search "your problem reddit" (for example "dry skin winter reddit");
- search "best + your category + reddit";
- search "competitor name + reddit".
Note the subreddits that keep coming up. That's where buying discussions happen, and what Google already shows.
Step 3: sort communities into three circles
- The core circle: communities about your exact category (skincare, coffee, running). Few, highly qualified, often strict about self-promotion.
- The use-case circle: communities where your product is useful without being the topic (hiking for a bottle, remote work for a chair).
- The audience circle: communities tied to who your customers are (new parents, students, a city or a country).
Successful brands show up in all three.
Step 4: evaluate each subreddit
For each one, look at:
- real activity: how many posts and comments per day, not just the member count;
- the rules: is self-promotion allowed? a dedicated thread? brand mentions banned?
- the tone: friendly, technical, sarcastic? You'll have to speak like them;
- buying questions: do people ask for recommendations? That's the most important signal.
Step 5: keep a short list
Better to be a recognized member of 6 communities than a stranger in 40. Pick 5 to 10 subreddits, mixing the three circles, and focus on them for at least a month.
The trap to avoid
Don't pick a subreddit because it's huge. Very large communities are heavily moderated and very noisy: your contribution disappears within hours. A community of 30,000 active members, focused on your problem, is often worth more than one with 5 million.
Once your list is ready, read our rules for promoting your brand without getting banned before posting anything.
